Opening Up Hypermedia

چکیده
1. Introduction Important goals for hypermedia information systems are that users, independent of their geographical location, can be given coordinated on-line access to material that is contained in multiple information databases, that they can later (re-)use extracts from the material already displayed, and that the other applications they use can also interact with the information. In other words, a hypermedia system needs to be open with respect to: • information — the same presentation 1 can be displayed by heterogeneous end-user systems; • data — pre-created media objects can be (re-)used in multiple presentations; • other applications — the hypermedia presentation environment can exchange data and/or messages with other applications. We discuss each of these categories in turn, but first look at the basic components of an open hypermedia environment. An intuitive overview is given in Fig. 1. Here, the basic components are the user's information need, an end-user environment, an information source, and the creator of the information. Any of these can be multiple, and exist in

متن کاملHyperPATH/O2: Integrating Hypermedia Systems with Object-Oriented Database Systems
We describe an integration of the hypermedia system HyperPATH with the object-oriented DBMS (OODBMS) O . Providing persistence to a hypertext system was the first motivation of this work. More generally, we were interested in a better understanding of the connection of hypertext systems with OODBMS. One of our goals was to define an abstract interface between HyperPATH and a variety of OODBMS’s...

متن کاملAH 12 years later: a comprehensive survey of adaptive hypermedia methods and techniques
A hypermedia application offers its users much freedom to navigate through a large hyperspace. Adaptive Hypermedia (AH) offers personalized content, presentation and navigation support. Many Adaptive Hypermedia Systems (AHS) are tightly integrated with one specific application and/or use a limited number of techniques and methods. This makes it difficult to capture all of them in one generic mo...
متن کاملHooking Up 3-Space: Three-Dimensional Models as Fully-Fledged Hypermedia Documents
This paper examines the incorporation of three-dimensional models into hypermedia systems as fullyedged documents. Their use provides hypermedia authors with an additional, powerful means of presentation. Display, linking, navigational, and authoring aspects of 3D hypermedia documents are discussed and are illustrated with examples taken from the Harmony Viewer for the Hyper-G hypermedia inform...
